Scrutinising the new European Commission

In the European Parliament, MEPs take part in hearings to scrutinise proposed new members of the European Commission.

This kind of scrutiny of decision-makers before they take office is common in the European Parliament, and similar scrutiny processes are seen as far away as the US Congress, but not in our own Westminster Parliament where ministers are simply picked by the Prime Minister and take office immediately.

I’d love to bring a proper democratic scrutiny system like this back to Westminster. Brexit or no Brexit, perhaps we can learn how from Europe how to make British democracy even better.
